The Shallow Tales Review, Nigerian-based electronic literary magazine dedicated to publishing new African writing, has released its 35th issue. This edition themed “TRANSCENDING” was released on the 30th of September, 2021. It features a conversation with and writing from British-Nigerian author, critic and editor, Adewale Maja-Pearce, as well as a retinue of African writings from contributors in Nigeria, Angola, and Russia.

The stories contained in this issue define and interrogate transcendence. They bring it to our remembrance—if perhaps we might have forgotten—that movement occurs, whether we acknowledge it or not.

The issue’s editorial suggests that transcendence can be seen from a spiritual or physical point of view, particular to each story presented in the album. Chief editor, Nzube Nlebedim, notes in the editorial that, “…in transcending, we evolve. We morph. In our search for hope, we rise.”

The release poster was designed by Peter Ogunjinrin, with cover images and photography from ace Nigerian photographer, Frank Lenz.

The magazine received over hundred submissions from across the world, but selected the nine published writers based on “…thematic merit and sophistication of language.” Nlebedim adds that, “these pieces constitute important fragments in the tapestry of 21st century African literature. For this, we are proud and privileged.”

Issue 35 was edited by Nzube Nlebedim, Chidiebube onye Okohia, and Orji Victor Ebubechukwu in the fiction, poetry, and non-fiction categories respectively.
