SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

FICTION AND NON-FICTION

At Afreecan Read we are keen on publishing stories on matters you deeply connect with, stories that have the power to echo in a reader’s mind long after reading. We love it when a story takes us to a part of the world, or a state of mind, somewhere we’d otherwise not have access to, so do well to leave us with mental notes after reading your story.

At Afreecan Read we believe the best of art comes from a place of nostalgia. Create imageries, conflicts that leave impressions in the soul of readers and kindle them to identifying themselves in your story.

We are also looking for stories that surprise us and leave us curious, make us want to engage the many beliefs we’ve held sacred. We appreciate originality. We are looking for a voice that is not afraid of being domesticated, echoes with everything it has ever been filled with. A voice that screams of itself and unapologetically regurgitates an African identity.

So surprise us, fill us in, leave us craving for more and leave us breathless. Make us want to know the author. Leave us totally undone and let us crawl out of your fictional world with novel ways to navigate the world.

Please keep in mind that we appreciate manuscripts that are meticulously edited. Like magic, they always find their way into our magazine. So take your time to tidy up your work as much as you can.

Word Count:

For fiction and nonfiction, we read a maximum of 3000 words, although it is possible to publish beyond the maximum word count if your story shows merit.

Font

Although we love experimenting new styles, our editors have shown themselves to be eternally stuck with the Times New Roman font style, size 12, and 1.5 line spacing. Please help them keep it that way. Please take note of the following as you send us your art

  1. Include a cover letter and a brief biographic statement in the body of the email.
  2. The subject of the email should include the genre and the first title of your submission, which also should be the name of the document being attached. For instance, Subject: Prose Submission— Holes in a Wall

Then name of the document: Prose Submission, Holes in a Wall.docx

No form of identification should be found in the document.

We are willing to promote good writers and willing to wager our time on good artistry.

We look forward to reading from you
