ABOUT AFREECANREAD

Afreecan Read (AR) is an organization that promotes an African literary culture and makes available online the rich contribution that African writers make to the world. Founded in 2016, it aims to bring out the varieties of literatures in Africa and take to parts and corners of the continent and the world. Rich with a variety of styles and diverse contexts from all generations of writers and African cultures, Afreecan Reads promotes a culture of reading and writing and also create an atmosphere where writers and thinkers can engage in nuanced analysis of Africa-related matters through the literary arts..

AR also aims to grow an online community that participates in and celebrates African literary culture. This community, through AR projects, will be able to engage with archives, reading clubs and literary centers in different localities.

Despite the online presence of so many African literary magazines, there are many African stories that have remained untold. Therefore, AR gives a voice to new writers and lends them a global audience even as stories would be discussed always by members of the editorial team and entries published only based on merit. Entries should be original, with nuance, and good use of language.

GENRE

We publish prose (short-stories and creative non-fiction) Plays and Poems. We also publish reviews and literary essays. AR creates awareness about African books especially the newest ones and the oldest ones which have been forgotten. We publish blurbs and literary reviews that promote all genres of literature including drama and literature-laced philosophical books.

PAYING OUR WRITERS

AR is a nonprofit organization; our magazine is not yielding any financial benefits. Therefore, even though we would have loved to, we are not able to pay our beloved writers and poets for now. In the meantime, an online presence of your piece and dissemination on all our social media platforms is the farthest we can go in appreciating the good work that you do.

OUR POLICY

Much as we strongly encourage submissions, we would not publish entries that do not agree with our ethics or ideology. We are a team that wants the human spirit to thrive, we celebrate diversity. Therefore, forms of art that undermine people based on skin color or gender or sexual orientation or religious affiliation will not be published on our platform.
