Now in its seventh year, the Lagos International Poetry Festival (LIPFest) has announced its theme for this year’s festival which is scheduled to run from October 21 through 24. This year’s festival is themed “Ancestral Imaginings.”

According to a post shared on its Instagram handle, this year’s festival will lean “into the wisdom and vision, of the old and the young, to guide us through the rubble of a pandemic. A generational journey aided by generational memory.”

This year’s festival involves a hybrid experience which involves virtual and in-person events, and it will engage a “diverse pool of writers, poets and thinkers drawn from across generations.” There will be poetry performances, as well as intellectual conversations that would converge “on the role of inter-generational support systems in building stronger, post-pandemic societies organized around egalitarian principles.”

The festival was founded in 2015 by the poet Efe Paul Azino with the aim of bringing “the biggest performers, writers, poets and artists from across the world to Lagos for a week of performances, workshops, and conversations.” Previous facilitators include Booker Prize winner Bernadine Evaristo, Kwame Dawes, Chris Abani, Kaveh Akbar, Inua Ellams and Nick Makoha amongst others.
