Nigerian Writers, Arinze Ifeakandu and ‘Pemi Aguda, are among the winners of 2023 O. Henry Prize, an annual American award given to exceptional short stories.

Arinze Ifeakandu, a Kirkus Prize finalist and author of the stunning debut, God’s Children Are Little Broken Things, is awarded for his short story, ‘Happy Is a Doing Word’, which first appeared in the Kenyon Review. You can also read it on LitHub, here. It follows the relationship of two characters, Binyelum and Somadina, as it progresses and morphs over the years.

‘Pemi, a previous winner, and Nigerian writer of multiple awards, is awarded for her short story ‘The Hollow’. It first appeared here, in Zoetrope. Femme Mag describes it as a “gripping story of a journey towards healing. It touches on the excesses of men, the cost of justice, physical architecture and the architecture of the soul.”

The O. Henry Award, an annual and prestigious American prize, awards single short stories published in an American journal/ outlet. The award is named after the American short-story writer, O. Henry.

The 2023 series is guest-edited by Lauren Groff, three-time National Book Award finalist and The New York Times–bestselling author. She describes these stories as ones that will “be set at your current vibration levels”, as voices that are “extraordinary.”
