Egyptian author and activist Nawal El-Saadawi has passed away at the age of 89 after battling a health crisis that had her hospitalized. She died on March 21, 2021.


Saadawi is well known for her novel Woman at Point Zero which was published in 1975 and translated in 1980. The novel is based on Saadawi’s encounter with a female prisoner in Qanatir Prison. The novel explores the issues of female circumcision, subjugation of women, and women’s freedom.


Nawal El Saadawi has written dozens of novels, short story collections, plays, and memoirs in Arabic.
